Doctorate: The University of Chicago, 1987, in Human Nutrition and Nutritional Biology. Dissertation research to redefine nutrient requirements to restore body composition and function for children with severe marasmus. Research was done in Lima, Peru using stable isotope tracer methods.
Post-Doctorate: Washington University School of Medicine, St. Measurements of energy metabolism and macronutrient fluxes in infants and children with malnutrition secondary to premature birth or cystic fibrosis. 1988-89
Master of Science: The University of California at Davis, 1982, in Human Nutrition, was one of the first studies to show cholesterol-lowering effects of barley consumption.
Scholarships:
Fulbright scholarship, 1977 in India. Status of women in India and testing hypothesis that to improve child-health, broad-based education for mothers is superior to “first-aid” type approaches taught to the mothers
