Avalanche, a poem by Jaki Elmo

Avalanche

The hill slips into the valley

The fresh flesh consumes the old

Before the castle crumbles

Before the crystal cracks

I am outnumbered

Infinity to one

Each snowflake a unique star

A forever fan of frozen blades

Trained to conquer my counterstrikes

Poised to bury me under the white dust

I push uselessly against the momentum of forward motion

As if I could undermine a process slowly perfected

To devour all passages to serenity

Naive, I expect to break the icy tide

To loosen the calculating fingers of nature’s grasp

I fight for the chance to resist the elements

But I am outnumbered,

Infinity to one
